On Thursday May 21st, the Mesquite Police Department and local businessman David Ballweg, of Loadtec, awarded 15 scholarships at the Virgin Valley High School Scholarship Awards Presentation. Mesquite Police Chief Troy Tanner and David Ballweg had previously announced the new scholarship opportunity to local seniors graduating from Virgin Valley High School.   This scholarship, titled “The David Ballweg Community Service and Leadership Scholarship” was created to recognize outstanding community leadership and service in young people.

At the presentation, Chief Troy Tanner stated “The goal of this scholarship is to reward students for their leadership in service to their community while assisting them in reaching their academic goals at the next level of education.”

Originally up to ten $500 scholarships were to be awarded.  Upon receiving the applications and reading the personal stories, essays, resumes, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, it quickly became apparent there were more than ten amazing and well deserving youth leaders who had applied.  David Ballweg, on his own accord, increased the donated amount in order to allow each deserving candidate a scholarship.

A total of fifteen Virgin Valley High School seniors were awarded the David Ballweg Community Service and Leadership Scholarship.  These students were; Estelle Hafen, Andrea Melchor, Amber Sandoval, Jasmine Correa, Brett Black, Sara Anderson, Ashton Bowler, Micayla Teschner, Gabriel Medina, Leslie Pacheco, Michala Powers, Resha Bunker, Alex Daniel Beaumont, Jamie Fails, and Dacen Cox.

The Mesquite Police Department wishes to thank these fifteen exemplary high school students for their dedication and commitment to higher education and their desire to provide service to our community.  We also wish to publicly recognize and thank David Ballweg for his example of being a leader in the community and for his contribution in providing such an incredible service to our future generations.
