Mesquite, NV – The Mesquite Police Department’s annual “Shop with a Cop” event will take place on Wednesday, December 18th.

During the event local elementary school children will spend one on one time with police officers while shopping for gifts. “One would expect the kids to run right to the toy section of the store, but many of them go straight for shoes and clothes. It is a humbling experience,” said Sergeant MaQuade Chesley

Sgt. Chesley, who has participated in the event over the past several years, continued, “The kids get so caught up in picking gifts for siblings and parents we oftentimes have to remind them to pick a fun gift for themselves.”

The children and their law enforcement partners will enjoy lunch at the Elks’ Lodge (#2811), before returning to school with their gifts.

Staff members at Virgin Valley and J. L. Bowler Elementary schools, who are familiar with the children’s circumstances, select those who will participate in the program. Care is taken to cross reference names with other community Christmas gifting organizations.

Local businesses, residents, and visitors to Mesquite have been very generous with donations to the program, which builds positive officer/youth relationships. “It is evident by the donations received how committed this community is to providing a memorable holiday experience for the children in this valley. We appreciate the community’s support.” said Police Chief Troy Tanner.

Donations to Shop with a Cop, or other police community outreach programs, can be dropped off at the Mesquite Police Department, located at 695 Mayan Circle. Checks should be made payable to the Mesquite Police Department.
