Beginning December 1st through the 31st, the Mesquite Police Department is asking all residents and business owners to join us in the Second Annual Project Blue Light.  This national program is a way to express support for your local law enforcement personnel, and to honor the brave and dedicated officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting communities throughout our nation.

Dispatch Supervisor Lori Todd said, “I feel it is an important time for citizens to express their support for their local police officers, especially with the unprecedented number of officers who have been deliberately targeted and killed this year.  Our officers strive to build a strong police/community partnership and this is an easy, but meaningful, way for citizens to show their support.”

The concept is simple.  Place a blue light in your window as an expression of support and in memory of the fallen heroes who gave their lives in service to us.  Other options include replacing an outside garage light with a blue bulb or stringing a blue rope light around a pole or tree.  Any blue light gesture sends the message of support.

Ace Hardware & Mesquite Lumber has agreed to participate and will be stocking blue lights at a reduced cost.  In addition, they will donate $1 for every blue light sold to the Mesquite Police Department to support the families of killed or injured officers.  Walmart also has agreed to stock an end cap display of blue lights.

Mesquite Gaming & the Eureka Casino has joined the Project Blue Light program and will be placing marquee announcements at the Casa Blanca and Virgin River Casino & Hotels, and the Eureka Casino & Hotel.  Finally, the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce, Terra West Property Management, Jensen Property Management and Colonial Property Management have endorsed Project Blue Light and each will assist in sending announcements to all of their respective members.

As part of this year’s Christmas Tree lighting at City Hall on December 8th at 6:00 p.m., we will also be lighting the “Beacon of Blue”.  This special spot light will illuminate a 30-foot beam of blue light to illustrate the City’s support of Project Blue light.  This spot light is being donated by Decors USA.

The members of the Mesquite Police Department wish to thank all of these corporate sponsors and encourage everyone to join us in honoring the brave and dedicated heroes who have been killed in the line of duty.  Let their sacrifice for us never be forgotten.
