Mesquite, NV – Throughout the past few days the Mesquite Police Department has received multiple calls, reference fraud attempts perpetrated on Mesquite residents. It has been reported that the scammers call Mesquite business owners and residents impersonating Overton Power bill collection services. The impersonating scammer tells the victim they are past due on their bill and if they don't pay immediately, their power will be turned off. The scammer then instructs the victim to go to a store and purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak card and load the card with the amount of cash owed for the alleged bill. The victim is then instructed to scratch off the back of the green card revealing a code, call the scammer and give them the code, thus granting them access to the money loaded on the Green Dot MoneyPak card.

MPD has not received any reports of the perpetrators successfully completing the scam. However, similar scams throughout the United States have left many people victimized.
