If you are interested in a career as a firefighter, the City of Mesquite and several Southern Nevada fire departments are launching a recruitment drive with a series of open houses from Nov. 16 to Dec. 5.

In addition to the Mesquite Fire and Rescue Department, other area fire departments participating in the Southern Nevada recruitment drive are Clark County, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Mount Charleston and Pahrump. Applications will be accepted online only through the website starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The number of applicants will be limited to the first 4,500 who apply online. The application period will close Tuesday, Dec. 22, or after the first 4,500 applications are received.

Clark County and the participating agencies are hosting seven outreach sessions to help interested applicants learn about the different fire departments and the testing, qualification and recruitment process. The first one will be held on Monday, Nov. 16, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the West Flamingo Senior Center, 6255 W. Flamingo Road.

“We are happy to host this recruitment drive and encourage anyone interested in becoming a firefighter to attend one of the upcoming outreach sessions,” said Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell. “It’s a very competitive process to become a firefighter. The open house sessions are designed to give you the information you need to become a successful candidate with our fire department or another in Southern Nevada.”

Clark County’s Human Resources Department is hosting the recruitment website and will forward applications to partnering agencies. The candidates who successfully complete the application and testing process will be forwarded to fire departments for consideration as openings occur within their departments starting next year. Minimum qualifications for each agency, testing dates and other pertinent information about the recruitment are posted on . Submitting an application is the first step in the process. Applicants also will be required to take a written exam and pass a physical abilities test called the Candidate Physical Ability Test, or CPAT. The CPAT can be taken locally at the College of Southern Nevada. For more information, visit
