New I-15 Interchange in Mesquite

In July 2016, the City of Mesquite opened Exit 118 for operation.

This new interchange includes a four-lane bridge over I-15 (two lanes in each direction), as well as a new four-lane (two lanes in each direction) approach roadway north of the I-15 corridor between the new bridge and West Pioneer Boulevard. Overall, the project costs $20 million with actual construction costing $14.7 million from Fuel Revenue Indexing (FRI).

The new interchange on I-15 created 190 jobs and supports improved connectivity to the 800-acre master-planned Mesquite Technology and Commerce Center (MTCC), the location of numerous technology, industrial, distribution and manufacturing businesses. The MTCC helps the Mesquite-area economy by creating new jobs, diversifying the local economy and keeping consumer dollars local. The new interchange will allow for a more direct and convenient route for trucks to access the MTCC, alleviating congestion and improving safety at the existing Exit 120 interchange in future years.

In a break with tradition, Meadow Valley Contractors used an archway design for the interchange, rather than a traditional bridge overpass. The archway design is the first of its kind to be used on Interstate 15.

In addition to the unique engineering design, the artwork and landscaping for the project will also catch drivers’ eyes. On one side of the archways is artwork depicting on the mesas that dot the horizon. On the other, the Virgin Mountains are portrayed. The Virgin River is also included in the artwork for the interchange. Metal flora and fauna are scattered throughout the project.

About FRI

This project is paid for, in part, by fuel revenue indexing. Fuel revenue is generated each time motorists fill their vehicles with gas. A portion of what they pay at the pump helps fund transportation projects throughout Clark County.  For motorists, this averages out to about a dime a day.
