This Weekend in MesquiteNV

 Feb. 6-10, 2013

MESQUITE, NV (Feb. 6, 2013)--Things ramp up in Mesquite this weekend with rugby, softball and soccer tournaments slated for City athletic venues.

“Old Guys Rugby” will practice today (Feb. 6) and play a slate of games on Thursday from 10 a.m. to around 4 p.m.  Tournament organizer Nick Viselli represents the Virginia Cardinals Rugby Club team. He said the idea came from fellow players wanting to play in Mesquite before coming to watch the HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series tournament in Las Vegas this weekend.  The tournament features teams from throughout the world and will be seen on NBC sports.

Viselli hopes to get the word out farther in advance so that players can make their travel plans to include what he hopes to be an annual tournament in Mesquite for rugby players in the 45-54 and 55-year old plus divisions.

Utah Youth Soccer Association will sponsor the Olympic Development Program (ODP) Combine for girls this Friday through Sunday at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex. It will be all business for the participants who were selected from an elite group of girls aged 13-16 for Olympic development. According to the UYSA website, they were selected through a rigorous tryout process and demonstrated exceptional “individual technical, tactical, physical and psycho-social components of the game.”

At the end of the month the boys ODP group will come to Mesquite (Feb. 22-24).

United Softball Association’s Desert Championship tournament will be held on Friday through Sunday at Pioneer Park and Hunter Sports Park. Tournament director Tami Letterman is expecting about 4,000 participants and spectators will attend the three-day tournament.
