This Week in Mesquite NV Athletics

March 4-10, 2013

Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Soccer and NASCAR

MESQUITE, NV (March 4, 2013)—Lacrosse, softball, baseball and soccer is on tap at athletic venues in Mesquite during the Las Vegas NASCAR weekend.

Virgin Valley High School will produce the Sherm Bennett Memorial tournaments this weekend with the Cactus Classic Baseball and Desert Winds girls softball tournaments Thursday-Saturday at Pioneer Park and high school fields (see schedule at end of story).

The USSSA will host a Class E men's slowpitch softball tournament Friday and Saturday at Pioneer, Hunter and Old Mill ball fields.

Southern Nevada Lacrosse Association will host a varsity and JV games with Red Rock Club (St. George area) team vs. Green Valley High School (Las Vegas) at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex on Friday.

F.C. Mesquite will host its first league youth games of the season on Saturday at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex.

It’s NASCAR Weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway which means that Mesquite hotel rooms are sold out by fans making a strategic traffic move of their own. Usually traffic coming northbound on I-15 is very slow and NASCAR fans driving southbound from Mesquite have an easier time of it going to and from the events.

In other sports action, the Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley High School swim teams began practicing in the Rec Center outdoor pool in preparation for their season opening meets in a few weeks. Youth flag football and coed and men’s softball City Leagues are in season. Youth flag football is played at the Recreation Center West Field and coed and men’s softball games are at Hunter Sports Park. Signups for the inaugural season of the Virgin Valley Little League baseball are being taken at the Rec Center (April 15 is the season opener).

The Recreation Center, The Duece, Mesquite Campus and Senior Center are venues providing many programs for health, fitness, fun and social activity. To register for youth or adult programs, reserve park pavilions or for league signups, contact the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services at the Mesquite Recreation Center, 100 W. Old Mill Road; call (702) 346-8732 or log on to www.MesquiteNV.gov. The City website has online registration and interactive maps to athletic venues and parks.
