Mesquite Senior Games begins

USA Girls Fastpitch Softball Tourney

MESQUITE, NV (March 27, 2013)—Let the games begin…the 12th annual Mesquite Senior Games, that is. With April kicks off the Mesquite Senior events with the first week of events to include Bocce Ball on Monday and Tuesday, Tennis on Wednesday through Saturday and the new Senior Golf Long Drive event on Saturday at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex.

Also in town this week is a USA girls fastpitch softball tournament at Pioneer Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Frank Pati, chairman of the Mesquite Senior Games, wanted to add the Long Drive Competition to give athletes the opportunity to hit off the same Grid where the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships are held.

Terri Rylander is the venue chair for the new Golf Long Drive event who has been working with a committee of enthusiastic volunteers to make the experience a memorable one for participants. Athletes must bring their own drivers and will be provided range balls for practice rounds and the same balls and tees the pros use for competition.

Some sport registrations are still open, but late participants are encouraged to check for individual sport information online at or in the Senior Games brochure. Onsite registrations are taken at Basketball Skills, Senior Golf Long Drive, Track & field and Target Pistol.

Senior Athletes will compete within certain age groupings in five year increments for most sports and by gender (50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85+).  According to Mesquite Senior Games guidelines, “Competition Age” equals age at the year’s end, (e.g., if 50th birthday occurs any time during 2013, an athlete would compete as age 50).

“The Senior Games events gives serious athletes and weekend warriors a chance to stay active and in touch with friends and competitors,” said Bryan Dangerfield, Director of Athletics & Leisure Services.  “We commend Frank Pati and his dedicated Senior Games volunteers, committee members and venue coordinators for all they do for our citizens and visitors from out of town.”

FC Mesquite league games will be played Saturday at the Recreation Center West Field due to the Senior Golf Long Drive competition at the MSEC.

City League coed (Tuesday) and men’s (Wednesday) softball is played evenings at Hunter Park.

MLB’s Pitch, Hit & Run competition for local youth will be held at Pioneer Park on Monday, April 8 and produced by the Recreation Division of the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services.
