The Mesquite NV Sports & Event Complex will host the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships highlighted by a six-title championship day on Saturday, Sept. 21 and the Final 8 Open Division Showdown on Friday, Sept. 27.

According to Long Drivers of America CEO Art Sellinger, this year’s event from Sept. 18-27, will crown six divisional champions from among more than 400 competitors from around the world. The Long Drive event has been held in Mesquite, Nev., since 1997.

He said the Golf Channel dedicated October as “Long Drive” month with four Prime Time (6 p.m. Pacific) Wednesday time slots. The first three shows will be one-hour taped airings; “Showcasing the stars and history of Long Drive” on Oct. 9, “Road to the World Finals” on Oct. 16, and “Showdown to the Final 8” on Oct. 23. A live two-hour special “World Finals” in Las Vegas will air on Oct. 30. Golf Channel U.S. will also feature the shows as video on demand and four re-airings of each show can be seen Oct.-Dec. 2013.

NBC Sports will have a Long Drive show on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m., (Pacific), following the U.S. Winter Olympic Trials segment.

“With the Golf Channel giving more in depth coverage of the event, we’d love to show the world that Mesquite loves golf,” said Bryan Dangerfield, director of Mesquite NV Athletics & Leisure Services. “We are encouraging Mesquite residents and visitors to be a part of the TV audience and cheer on the World’s longest drivers in golf, especially on the featured competition days on Sept. 21 and 27.”

Sellinger said the Open Division was expanded from 128 to 192 to allow more hitters a chance to come to Mesquite, including 25 percent of them coming from outside the U.S.

This year will be the sixth time the Mesquite NV Sports & Event Complex has hosted the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships since it was built in 2008. The facility was constructed as a multi-use facility with a special tee box and grid suitable for world class Long Drive competition. It is also the site of Championship events for soccer, rugby, football and lacrosse.
