City Athletic Venues host CAN-AM Softball, VVHS Soccer, Simon Fraser Football

MESQUITE, NV (Oct. 1, 2013)—Following 10-days of RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship competition, Mesquite’s Fall softball tournaments begin with the CAN-AM softball tournament over two weekends, Friday-Sunday (Oct. 4-6) and the following Thursday through Tuesday (Oct. 11-15). The softball tournament, sandwiched around competition at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, will be host to 40 teams from throughout North America at Pioneer Memorial Park, Hunter Sports Park and Old Mill Road Park ball fields.

Virgin Valley High School soccer will return to the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex (MSEC) for games on Tuesday and Thursday after playing at the Mesquite Recreation Center fields for the past month while the Long Drive competition was being setup and contested.  VVHS Cross Country will have a meet on Wednesday starting at the MSEC.

Mesquite will host a Canadian NCAA Division II football team when Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, Canada), practices on Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m. at the MSEC. The Clan will be playing Dixie State College at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and due to the crowds from the St. George Marathon they chose to stay in Mesquite. According to assistant coach Ryan McFadden, from the Internet photos, the facilities at the MSEC looked like a great spot to have practice.  Simon Fraser is the only Canadian member of the NCAA. They compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

City League softball is played at Hunter Sports Park with Coed on Tuesdays and men’s wood bat league on Wednesdays.

The NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick competition on Sept. 26, at Hunter Sports Park saw a record number of participants as 111 local boys and girls (ages 8-15) competed for a chance to move on to Sectional competition in St. George Oct. 26 or further in conjunction with a San Francisco 49ers game.

Flag Football has games on Wednesday nights and practices on Mondays. The youth league has also shown growth over years past with 120 participants in two divisions ages 4-5 and 6-7.

Pickleball has open gym at the Rec Center on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m.  As interest picks up, there will be Pickleball clinics and even tournaments. There are two portable Pickleball courts set up in the west gymnasium at the Rec Center. For those new to the sport without equipment, there are paddles and balls available for check out.

FC Mesquite league games are Saturday at the Recreation Center West Field.
